Recalling the good old days

April 28, 2011Dear Sir,I have just returned from a most enjoyable vacation in Bermuda. My friends were so welcoming and kind and thanks to you all. It was interesting to see the new buildings which were under construction when I left one year ago now completed. Seon Place, the bank, the Washington Mall plus condos. Whatever happened to the elegant and attractive Bermudian architecture of modest proportions? This was so appealing to our visitors because it was different. In my opinion, these very large and new structures are out of proportion to the size of the City of Hamilton and its population. Of course there will be those who disagree and all apart from the new Courts building were privately financed. However every capital project the Government had financed since the days of the Berkeley Institute have been many millions over budget. Surely this wasted money should have been used to address the social ills of the community which has greatly deteriorated and improving the education a priority. The lack of a sound education breeds all the discontent not being equipped to deal with the jobs needed. Idle hands will make mischief.I am pleased to read that there will at last be a viable Opposition Party by the UBP and the BDA joining together. It is a pity that some comments voiced by the PLP are so childish or maybe they are scared of some good competition. As the old saying goes: “We had the best years.” Bermuda was good to me and I do miss the Rock. Just wish for those good old days.MONICA BERRYHampshire, UK
