Elliot Primary's P1 Gilbert class shows off their musical skills

Learning the basics: Zhani Burgess; Zamuri Richardson and Raequan Woolridge-Butler P1 students at Elliot Primary learn the basics of music performance during music lessons with Mrs. Raynor-Holt.

Turn the beat around, love to hear percussion — and xylophone and violin and recorder — in Mrs. Raynor-Holt's music classes at Elliot Primary.

Recently the students were able to demonstrate their skill and enthusiasm for Chris Franklin-Smith, Cambridge International Curriculum consultant who visited the school earlier this year.

P1 Gilbert students were learning to read music as they played "Hot Cross Buns" on the xylophone during a class for the Instrumental Music module when Mr. Franklin-Smith toured the school with principal Cathy Bassett.

Other music modules taught at the school include theory, choral singing, music from other cultures, modern music and applied technology.

Mrs. Holt also has musicians come into the school for Meet The Musicians sessions where children go to their chosen instrumental family, (brass, wind, percussion or string) and observe hands-on demonstrations by the musicians who volunteer to come to the school and share with the children.

Aidan O'Reilly is one of the Primary 4 students who participate in violin practice with violin specialist Ms Sunshine every Thursday, something he describes as "can be a lot of fun."

Rickai Richardson, also in Primary 4, summed up his feelings about music at Elliot Primary with these words: "During music at Elliot, we play instruments and sing and learn a lot about music.

"Mrs. Holt has a beautiful singing voice and she can play instruments. In music we play the recorders and Mrs. Holt teaches us how to play songs.

"My favourite song we played on the recorder was 'Hot Cross Buns'. I like music because, Mrs. Holt has a beautiful voice and it is my favourite subject at school."
