Foggo steps down as St. George’s selection chairman

Lewis Foggo has resigned as chairman of St George’s Cup Match selection committee. The former wicketkeeper quit the post at the club’s last annual general meeting. Both Foggo and St George’s president Neil Paynter did not return calls to this newspaper by press time yesterday.Club cricketer Damon Walker has reportedly been appointed as Foggo’s successor.“Damon Walker is the new chairman of selectors and management have a lot of confidence in him,” revealed a reliable club source, who spoke under condition of anonymity. “Bussy (Foggo) resigned because of work and personal commitments.”The club source added: “Damon has always been around cricket and he is well known among the Cup Match players. Being chairperson of anything is an important role and I’m sure Damon will be equal to the task if he is surrounded by experienced committee members.”It is understood that St George’s are also keen to make changes elsewhere on their selection committee. Among those believed to have been invited to serve on the committee are former Cup Match stars Charlie Marshall and Arnold Manders.Marshall is Cup Match’s most prolific batsman and the first colt to score a century in the classic. Manders is among a small group, that also includes Marshall, to score multiple centuries in Cup Match.Meanwhile, it is understood that Lionel Cann has emerged as a strong candidate to captain St George’s in Cup Match at Somerset this year should injured skipper Oronde Bascome fail to recover from surgery in time for the mid-summer classic.Cann has already indicated that he is willing to take over the captaincy if asked.“If it is a crisis situation and no one else was available and I was asked I wouldn’t think twice about that,” said Cann, who led St George’s to Cup Match glory at Somerset in 2006. “It’s one of the biggest honours to captain your country or captain Cup Match.”‘The Warwick player/coach was instrumental in St George’s’ thrilling two-wicket victory last year at Wellington Oval, scoring a vital 49 not out in the second innings.
