Town win tour clash
Yesterday's game at the Wellington Oval between Dandy Town and St. George's lent a new definition to the word lacklustre as both sides offered an uninspired performance.
Town emerged victorious on second-half strikes by Lionel Cann and Carlos Smith. Replying for St. George's was Marlon Outerbridge.
A moment of silence at the start of the game was offered on behalf of Town player Jerome (J.B.) Belboda who was killed earlier yesterday morning in an automobile accident.
During the first half of play, both sides struggled mightily as they tried desperately to find any semblance of momentum in their offensive attack. The cold, blustery conditions provided no assistance and, in fact, thwarted many potential opportunities for scoring.
In the 14th minute of play, Lionel Cann received a perfect through-ball from Gladwin Johnson as defender Andre Todd slipped down.
Cann moved in on goal and caught St. George's goalkeeper Troy Hall off his line. Needing nothing more than a lob to score, Cann sent a weak grounder straight at Hall.
Four minutes later, St. George's launched an attack as Delbert Minors fed a sideline pass to Quinton Francis. Francis crossed over from deep on the wing and Sinclair Smith sent a glancing header whistling across the goalmouth.
In the 30th minute, Walter Musson intercepted a poor pass by St. George's 'keeper Hall when Hall left his penalty area.
Caught out of goal, with no one covering, the 'keeper was fortunate when Musson's shot took one bounce and went over the crossbar from about 25 yards out.
Carlos Smith created the game's first score when he beat two defenders down the right wing and squared the ball over to a waiting Lionel Cann, who slotted the ball home from close in at the 57th minute of play.
Smith was creating havoc in the St. George's defence all afternoon with his quick, slashing runs at goal. He was rewarded in the 78th minute when he powered home a shot from 10 yards out after receiving a pass from Paul Cann just inside the penalty area.
St. George's managed to score two minutes from regulation time. However, it was too little too late.
Marlon Outerbridge drove a fierce, first time-strike past Town 'keeper Ricky Tucker when he pounced on a deflected cross from just inside the 18-yard box.
