New water safety handbook issued
pick up the newly-revised version of its handbook.
First produced in 1972, the updated version is the fourth edition of Bermuda Water Safety Council Handbook. It was last updated in 1986 by former Water Safety chairman E. Reid Kempe.
Present chairman Mark Selley yesterday said the objective of the handbook is to outline the different aspects of water safety in Bermuda and to, "provide the public with a working knowledge of proper boating procedure to ensure their safety...'' A labour of love for a year and a half, the 31-page handbook was put together by the 13-member Water Safety Committee and sponsored by BF&M Insurance Group.
Ross Spurling, Customer Service Assistant Manager of BF&M, was present for yesterday's press conference. He also presented the Council with a cheque for $6,000.
Mr. Selley, who raced outboard power boats for nearly 20 years, said he hoped the information contained in the booklet will allow readers to gain an understanding for water safety and he urged families to read it together.
The handbook, which was edited by Nick Pettit and features illustrations by cartoonist Peter Woolcock, offers safety tips for everything from swimming pool safety to navigating Bermuda shores, to using parachute rocket flares.
The handbook will be available to the public at marine retail stores, the Marine Police Section, BF&M and the Department of Marine & Ports. It will also be mailed to registered voters.
