Middle school hit by Covid-19 to shift to remote learning

A Pembroke middle school is to move to remote learning after a teacher tested positive for the coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for the education ministry said the new regime at Dellwood Middle School would start on Wednesday.

Diallo Rabain, the education minister, said: “The priority for the Department, principal and teachers is to quickly put in place the teaching, learning and support services for the students.

“A counsellor and therapist will be available to help students with anxiety, stress and other feelings they may be experiencing through the transition.

He added that Employee Assistance Programme help would be available for teachers and staff.

Mr Rabain said: “The principal and staff will keep parents and students updated through regular Zoom meetings and other communication tools.

“There will be parent, school advisers and year level meetings taking place in the coming days.”

The education ministry spokeswoman said printed materials would be given to pupils without online access to ensure they do not miss out on lessons.

Mr Rabain added: “The remote learning plan ensures that all teachers have the devices and support they need to teach students.

“Likewise, the Department of Education will work closely with the principal to identify students who do not have access to the internet or an electronic device.”

Mr Rabain said that coronavirus testing for pupils and staff was carried out at the school today and would continue tomorrow between 1pm and 5pm.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, thanked the school for its co-operation and the test team for its efforts to deal with the extra demand.

Ms Wilson added: “There was a minor administrative delay today in processing the testing paperwork at Dellwood.

“We will try to ensure there are no further delays going forward and apologise for any frustration caused.”
