North Village 4 Somerset Trojans 0Shaun Goater claimed his sixth piece of silverware as North Village coach after his team thrashed Somerset Trojans in the Friendship final on New Year's Day.Village, the defending champions, dominated from start to finish and could have won by a far greater margin had they not squandered a hatful of second half chances.Goater, who took over the reins as Village coach in December 2008, has now won the Premier Division title, three Friendship trophies and the Dudley Eve twice.Sunday's win also saw Village claim an unprecedented 11th Friendship trophy and their third on the trot a feat not accomplished since PHC's trio of wins between the 1985-86 and 1987-88 seasons under coach Leroy (Nibs) Lewis.Keishen Bean gave Village the lead at the National Sports Centre after cutting past two defenders before firing a shot past Trojans goalkeeper Shaquille Bean midway through the first half.Bean, who missed a pair of glorious opportunities after the break, went close to bagging a second when he struck the outside of the post with a strike from the edge of the box.Trojans were showing plenty of desire and determination, with teenage striker Chikosi Basden causing Village's defenders problems with his penetrative runs through the middle. The youngster, who has been training with a Stoke City developmental team in the UK, almost wiggled his way through on goal but saw his route blocked by his own strike partner Malachi Jones, who ran across his path.Jones also had a half chance after being put through on goal by Justin Corday but failed to get his shot away before Dakai Grant snuffed out the danger with a well-timed challenge.Vernon Tankard doubled Village's advantage soon after the restart, the midfielder latching onto Keishen Bean's threaded pass and hitting a first-time shot past keeper Bean.By now Trojans, who pulled off a shock win against Village in the league last month, were rarely threatening and should have fallen further behind when Keishen Bean somehow fired Logan Alexander's left wing cross over the bar from close range.Village saw another good chance go begging when Bean again missed the target from a good position following good work by young midfielder Grant. It took the Rams until the 85th minute to kill the game off when Sammy DeGraff stroked home a penalty after Alexander had been hauled down in the box by Trojans defender Trevin Ming. With only a few minutes remaining Village talisman Ralph Bean completed the rout with the best goal of the game, a powerful strike from distance that flew into the top corner beyond the outstretched fingertips of Trojans keeper Bean.Having lost in the final of the Dudley Eve earlier this season against Dandy Town, Village coach Goater was relieved to see his side add another piece of silverware to their well-stocked cabinet.“Last time we played here (against Dandy Town) we didn't do ourselves justice and so I'm pleased we have put that behind us with this performance,” he said.“I don't think any team on the Island could have challenged us today playing like we did.”Goater, who also praised Trojans' fighting spirit, said he had seen signs his team were rediscovering their best form.“I was looking forward to playing Trojans because they're a very competitive side and have a never-say-die spirit,” he said.“We've now won our last few matches and I think we're starting to find the form we were showing during the start of the season.”North Village: J Williams, D Grant, K Dill, D Tankard, V Tankard (J Jennings, 51), J Boyles (J Briers, 51), J Davis, S DeGraff, R Bean, L Alexander, K Bean (J Lee, 77)Substitutes not used: J Smith-DeShields, K Dill, P Smith, L DillGoals: Bean, 23, Tankard, 48, DeGraff (pen 85), Bean 89Somerset Trojans: S Dill, T Harvey (T Wade, 50), J Rogers, D Seymour, T Ming, A Trott, J Butterfield (J Simmons, 58), J Scott, M Jones (J Bean, 50), J Corday, C BasdenSubstitutes not used: G Smith, L Burgess, D Minors, A CharlesYellow cards: T MingReferee: A MouchetteMan of the match: J Davis (Village)
