Aerobics instructor plans 24-hour blitz to raise money for Campaign
A straight 24 hours of aerobics may seem an arduous task but Marilyn Steede is hoping others join her Cup Match fundraiser in aid of New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign .She made the Campaign her cause after reading that former St George’s Mayor E Michael Jones had pledged to run the May 24 half-marathon derby in aid of the charity. The campaign is designed to benefit the Mirrors programme and also to raise money for the education of at-risk youth.Ms Steede — the Bermuda Regiment’s first female Sergeant Major — has proved her endurance over the past decade with 24-hour walk-a-thons for charity.“I learned a lot about Mirrors, and I felt a little guilty that I hadn’t given it much attention,” she said. “That’s why I want people who gave gone through Mirrors, and programmes like Raleigh International and De Boys Day Out Club, and any people who are on grants from New Beginnings Education Trust, to join me for this. This is one time I don’t want to be by myself.”A certified aerobics instructor, Ms Steede said the routines she has planned from 6.30am on July 28 to the same time on July 29 are strictly low-impact.“Anybody can do it,” she said. “It’s not jumping-jacks. You’re not going to be busted by it. Your feet are always on the floor. I know people are going to say it can’t be done, but it’s going to happen.”She said her mantra in life was: “Strive to achieve goals beyond your natural ability, rather than setting goals that equal your proven ability.”With a little fruit and juice and slower exercises when participants need to catch their breath, Ms Steede wants to help others go beyond the bounds of possibility. She added: “I am inviting members from the Bermuda Islands Association of the Deaf to join me as well, through my friend Jennifer Fahnbulleh. People are free to come as spectators, or just walk in and join us.”Any takers who want to go the distance for the New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign can pay through a registration fee. Forms for registration will become available online once a location is set for the event. In the meantime, Ms Steede still plans to go ahead with her customary 24-hour walk in November.“I guess you can gather that I love to be challenged in whatever I do,” she said. For more information telephone 238-3358.
