Village youth steal the show

Last Saturday proved to be a highly successful day for the North Village community as three of the club?s teams immersed themselves in glory.

While the club?s Under-17 and senior teams achieved Knockout Cup and Friendship Trophy success at the National Sports Centre, earlier in the day at Shelly Bay, Village?s Under-11 team captured the Hamilton Parish Youth Tournament in dramatic fashion in an all-Village final.

Entering the final as favourites over Village?s developmental team, the more seasoned squad were rocked back on their heels when Eric Lavigne gave the underdogs a dream start with an early goal.

From here the ?B? team battled on bravely and were seemingly headed for an upset victory before Akiri Trott, the tournament?s most valuable player and top poacher, put things back into perspective with an equaliser minutes from the end of play.

Both teams fought hard in extra-time but it was Village?s seasoned crop of youth players who would prevail, Jalen Trott scoring the golden goal late in the second period.

?Coach Sammy Trott and I have worked tirelessly with North Village?s number one and two teams. So it was a very rewarding final,? said Village coach Troy Harvey.

?It?s been a pretty good season for the number one team. The biggest challenge has been keeping them motivated to play against lesser opponents,? he added. ?Our number two team ? which is a developmental team consisting of many under- nine players ? have done well but they?ve had their challenges too.?

Village?s Under-11 first team were also victorious earlier this month in the St.David?s Seven-A-Side tournament.

Others who competed in Peppers? sixth annual Youth Football Festival were St.David?s, Devonshire Colts, Wolves, Boulevard, Southampton Rangers and Hamilton Parish.

Individual awards for excellence went to Akiri Trott (most valuable player and tournament leading goalscorer), Kiaaron Minks (best defender), Michael Lavigne (best goalkeeper) and Damali Bell (best midfielder).

?It?s always a success . . . even if we had only two teams compete,? said tournament organiser Shakir Hassan, who refused to allow a dwindling number of participants sour the occasion.

?I was a bit disappointed a tournament of this magnitude didn?t get the representation it warranted. But it was still a success.?
