Interfaith ceremony will bless schoolyard murder scene

An interfaith ceremony will be held on the Victor Scott Primary School field this Sunday to bless the site where a brutal murder took place on Good Friday.

Neighbourhood clergy will hold an outdoor service from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday before Rise Above, Bermuda holds its Family Fun Day starts at 2 p.m.

Rise Above — an anti-violence community group started in the wake of the Christmas shootings — hopes the community will come out to reclaim the grounds.

On Good Friday Kimwandae Walker, 35, was gunned down while flying kites with his two children. More than 30 people, including children, were on the field when Mr. Walker was singled out by two men on a motor bike and shot multiple times.

Rise Above founder Dwayne Caines said last night: “We want to send a very clear message: we still believe in the good in our community.

“We look forward to spending a day with the neighbourhood and community, so bring your family and friends to enjoy a day of fun!

“We moved last week’s fun day out of respect for the funeral but many in the community have been asking if we are going ahead with it. Others thought we should do something more than just fun, which is where the church community has got involved.”

At the event there will be free beverages and snacks as well as fun castles, egg hunts, running races, face paintings and much more. It will go on until 7 p.m. and Police will be there too.
