Bermuda is being warned to brace itself as Tropical Storm Rafael rushes towards the Island.According to the Bermuda Weather Service's 12 noon update today, the storm is due to be at its closest at 10pm tomorrow when it will be 118 miles to the east southeast of the Island.It is moving at around 10mph and has sustained winds of 60mph. The system is expected to reach hurricane strength sometime today and a tropical storm warning is now in effect for Bermuda.Winds on the Island are expected to increase today, with gusts reaching gale force overnight.As the storm approaches tomorrow the Island is expected to see rain, with east-south-easterly winds, increasing north-easterly to storm force by noon. Gusts could reach hurricane force by the midafternoon before weakening.The Emergency Measures Organisation met this morning and National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief said: "Rafael is expected to bring storm force winds and rough seas. However, we are expecting the worst of the storm to pass to our east and it will therefore be business as usual tomorrow.”Mr Perinchief also said the storm is expected to strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane as it passes and urged residents to be prepared and monitor the storm for any change in strength and direction.Public Schools will be open tomorrow as will all Government offices.The Sea Express ferry service and Department of Public Transportation will run commuter services tomorrow and will assess the weather as the storm moves closer.The Department of Airport Operations (DAO) will continue to closely assess the latest weather forecast information and will make any determination on potential airport disruptions based on updates from the Bermuda Weather Service.Government said that although the latest forecast shows the iIland will not experience hurricane force winds residents are still advised to check their emergency kits to be sure supplies are adequate. Atypical emergency kit would include items such as flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, non–perishable foods, an ample water supply and disposable utensils. An updated Disaster Advisory Plan is posted on the Government Portal on the Ministry of Health website.
