<i>Queen's Birthday Honours List 2008</i> Hospitals Board ex-CEO honoured

Joan Dillas- Wright

A former CEO of Bermuda Hospitals Board and a retired Deputy Commissioner of the Bermuda Police Service are among the honourees in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours.

Former BHB CEO Joan Dillas-Wright was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Mrs. Dillas-Wright was the chief executive officer for the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) from 2003 until 2006.

In her role, she provided strategic direction and leadership to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI).

Mrs. Dillas-Wright began her career as a staff nurse in the teaching hospital in London, (Guy's St. Thomas, and King's College).

Mrs. Dillas-Wright has considerable general nursing experience in the medical, maternity and intensive care unit fields as well as a strong counselling background.

She has also served as Head Nurse, Chief Alcoholism Counsellor (KEMH), Director of Nursing, St. Brendan's Hospital (SBH), Director of Programmes and Administration (SBH) and Consultant to the Chief Executive Officer of the BHB.

Also honoured on this year's list with the Queen's Certificate and Badge Honour were Major (Ret) Herman E. Eve, EM; Deputy Commissioner (Ret) Roseanda L. Young; Julie-Kay Darrel; Drum Major Jeremy J. Durrell; Vincent 'Drip' Minors; and, Jane Bermingham.

Deputy Commissioner (Ret) Mrs. Roseanda L. Young served 30 years in the Bermuda Police Service.

She became the highest-ranking female officer and served as the Deputy Commissioner before her recent retirement from the Service.

Major (Ret) Herman E. Eve, EM was a career soldier of the Bermuda Regiment for 35 years and most notable, as the Regimental Sergeant Major form 1980 until 1993.

During that time he was responsible for the Parade for the Presentation of the Regiment's New Colours by Her Late Royal Highness, the Princess Margaret. Major Eve served as the Training Wing Warrant Officer and retired as Quartermaster.

Julie-Kay Darrell was honoured for services to the community for her ardent work though the Alzheimer's support group.

Drum Major Jeremy J. Durrell was honoured for services the community in leasing the Bermuda Island Pipe Band, and service to music in the community since 1955. He is one of the Band's original and founding members.

When contacted last night, Mr. Durrell said: "I'm honoured, but I would say that there are others in the band that could equally deserve to be honoured in this way."

Vincent (Drip) Minors was honoured for services to trade unionism in Bermuda.

Mr. Minors, along with the late Carlton Askia, was instrumental in the organisation of the dockworkers division for the Bermuda Industrial Union.

And Jane Bermingham was honoured for her work as a nurse and lead instructor for the original CPR programme.

She is also vice chairman of Agape House's Friends of the Hospice charity.
