Rain is on the horizon for holiday
Those looking to enjoy fun in the sun this Cup Match weekend may be left disappointed — but with more water in their tanks.
According to the Bermuda Weather Service, the Island may see as much as five inches of rain, along with heavy winds and even thunderstorms between Thursday and Saturday.
"The general theme is going to be wet," said a Weather Service spokesman. "There could be patches where it's nice and sunny, but we're expecting a good bit of rain."
He explained that a warm front stalled to the south of the Island yesterday, and is expected to pass over Bermuda today, bringing rain and thunder.
Once the warm front has passed, the Island will start to be affected by a low front developing to the northwest, which is expected to put Bermuda in a "moist southwesterly flow".
"We're expecting good rainfall, and a chance of thunderstorms," said the Weather Service. "There is also the chance of strong winds, with gusts up to 20 knots.
"It's too early to say for sure if we're going to put up a small craft warning, but if the gusts do reach that level, I would expect an order."
While the rain might hinder the annual Cup Match, it could also help bring Bermuda out of its current drought.
"At this point in the year, we would expect to have had 30.88 inches of rain, but so far we've only had 20.07 inches.
"What's worse is that we had normal rainfall until April, so that entire drop has happened since then.
"Over the next four or five days, we're expecting somewhere between two and five inches of rain, but it's very difficult to accurately predict rainfall in the summer."
