Manders hoping to meet tennis big guns
Gavin Manders is ready to put his best foot forward when he and three of Bermuda's top tennis players travel to Delhi, India to compete in the Commonwealth Games.
It will be the maiden appearance for Bermuda's Sportsman of the Year at a major international multi-sport event
Team Bermuda will compete in five events at the R.K Khanna Tennis Complex – men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles.
The team also includes sisters Tara and Jacklyn Lambert along with Ball State University player David Thomas, while Nick Kyme will be flying the flag for the Island's squash community.
For Manders, it will be another chance to showcase his skills on the big stage.
"To be honest, I'd love the opportunity to play someone like Leyton Hewitt or Andy Murray if they are coming," said Manders. "It would be the experience of a lifetime to compete against one of them and get a taste of the tour level."
The Games are the third-largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Summer Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
Several top tennis players are expected to represent their countries, including Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, Mark Knowles of Bahamas, Sania Mirza of India, Jamie Murray of Scotland, Daniel Nestor of Canada, and Anastasia Rodionova of Australia.
Unfortunately for Manders, Hewitt has said that he will not make the trip to India as he is concerned about security problems and losing ATP ranking points.
Manders is interested to see how he copes playing in a straightforward knockout format as compared to the Davis Cup team competition.
"I don't really have any expectations because I've never seen the level we are going to face," he said.
"I do know it will be the highest level I've ever played against, so all I can promise is that I will fight to the end and leave the court knowing I left it all out there.
"In the Fed Cup and Davis Cup you get to play four or five matches which gives you time to get used to your surroundings and get better every day.
"The Commonwealth Games is single elimination, you lose and you're done.
"Also, the level is a lot higher as you have players who play in Group One and even a few from the World Group in Davis Cup, whereas we are in Group IV in our region."
Also representing Bermuda in Delhi will be swimmers Kiera Aitken, Roy-Allan Burch and Nick Thomson, long-jumper Tyrone Smith and sprinter Tre Houston and shooters Ross Roberts, Sinclair Raynor, Carl Reid and Nelson Simons. The Games run from October 3-14.
