Mom of two jailed for stealing from bank

A bank teller accused of stealing $35,000 from Capital G bank has been sentenced in Magistrates’ Court to nine months in jail.Justina Wilson, 24, of South Terrace, Pembroke, pleaded with Magistrate Juan Wolffe not to separate her from her two children. She had admitted writing an unauthorised cheque for $35,000 to be drawn on the account of a client. The court heard that Wilson signed over the money to a female acquaintance, who then had Wilson place the money into her own account. The false cheque was payment for a Honda CRV, which Wilson’s defence lawyer Kenville Savoury said she needed the transport of her young sons. However, the September 24 offence was spotted by the bank, and Wilson was also caught on surveillance cameras making the unauthorised transactions. In court, Wilson broke down in tears as she told Mr Wolffe that she had tried to reverse the transaction but found it was already too late. However, Mr Wolffe told her she had held a high position of trust at the bank, which had been forced to repay the $35,000 and whose reputation could have suffered damage from the offence. He gave Wilson an immediate custodial sentence of nine months, with the car to be forfeited to help pay for her offence.Wilson must make restitution for the rest of the money within one year of being released from custody.
