Bluebirds make flying start to new campaign

Aiming for the top: YMSC Lady Bluebirds goal shooter Danielle Raynor and her team-mates are gunning for senior league supremacy this season.

Young Men’s Social Club Lady Bluebirds got the senior season off to a flyer at Bernard Park at the weekend.Led by Ebonie Burgess’ game-high eight points, the Lady Bluebirds breezed past Data Tech Netts 15-5 to win the season-opening Sylvia Easterly Tournament.Denise Rollins topped the Data Tech Netts scoring with four points.Lady Bluebirds goal shooter Daniell Raynor said: “We played very good netball at our own pace, defended well and mentally stayed in the game at all times and were triumphant in the end.”Lady Bluebirds remained unbeaten in the single elimination tournament, defeating Smooth and Easy Tigers (10-7), Newlife (16-10) and Signworx Netts (15-13) to set up a final showdown with Data Tech Netts.The Pembroke team finished runners up behind Data Tech Netts in the senior league last season and are keen to go one better this time around.“Our goal is to win the league and this (recent win over Data Tech Netts) definitely gives us a psychological boost going into the new season,” Raynor said.“But while we are confident we won’t be taking anything for granted because there are some really good teams out there.“We are not going to let this (Slyvia Easterly title) get to our heads.”The Slyvia Easterly Tournament is played each year in memory of the late Bermuda Netball Association (BNA) member.Last weekend’s event also featured individual and team shooting competitions.Jahture Trott won the individual competition for the fourth consecutive year, going seven for ten from the line, while Smooth and Easy Tigers captured the team shooting event.
