A police dog trained to detect firearms and explosives alerted police to a bag in attempted murder-accused Sanchey Grant’s bedroom, a jury heard.The dog searched the room when police executed a warrant at Mr Grant’s Hamilton Parish home the evening after a double shooting.Mr Grant, 20, is accused of being the gunman who opened fire outside Southside Cinema late on November 13 2009, leaving footballer Shaki Minors and his pregnant girlfriend Rene Kuchler seriously injured.Yesterday, dog handler and trainer McLaren Smith explained that he attended the search at the request of police on the evening of the following day.His dog, a Dutch Shepherd named Yara, sniffs out explosives including firearms and ammunition. When she finds these scents, she points to items with her nose and gets excited before she sits or lies down, he explained.Yara alerted to a chest of drawers in Mr Grant’s bedroom, and the search team emptied the contents on to the bed. At this point she alerted to a green and white bag marked Castrol GTX, which the police seized.Defence lawyer Jerome Lynch QC suggested the dog might react the same way if she smelled a sausage sandwich.However, Mr Smith replied that the dog would just eat a sausage sandwich, and would not get “hyper and energetic” like she does during a search.Mr Lynch repeated his questions about sausage sandwiches to Detective Constable Patrick Rock, who was also present for the search.“There was no sausage sandwich,” replied the detective.Mr Grant is on trial along with 30-year-old Pembroke resident Jahmel Blakeney, who prosecutors accuse of masterminding the double shooting.Victim Mr Minors named both defendants as associates of the Parkside crew, and admitted he was an associate of the rival group 42. The accused men deny attempted murder and gun possession charges, and the case continues.
