Testament to hard work and discipline
Fitness enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes packed into the Earl Cameron Theatre for the first Bermuda Bodybuilding Federation Fitness Extravaganza this past weekend. The showcase competition featured 20 exercise aficionados posing for prizes in seven categories. The show started just after 7pm with popular MC Bootsie chastising late-arriving patrons with lighthearted barbs. Soon after, young Niyan Outerbridge exploded onto the stage with a dazzling display of high kicks, splits, front flips, and handstands. This young man exhibited buckets of strength, stamina, and showmanship, making his performance a definite highlight of the evening, and earning the top spot in the Kids’ Fitness (Male) category.Miss Diamond Dill was next. She also employed an impressive repertoire of flips, splits, and props to wow the crowd and take the top prize in the Kids’ Fitness (Female) category.Teen Kung-Fu expert Kaelin Cox joined the competition next, delivering a solid fitness routine to take the win in the Men’s Fitness Category. The Figure Fitness competition featured three impressively toned young ladies posing for the judges. In the end, newcomer Kay-Annie Reid-Young took the top prize, followed closely by Welma Steede and Lisa Pickering. The longest, and most hotly contested, competition of Saturday night was the Men’s Physique category. This relatively new category found a group of ten gym buffs vying for glory, as well as hoots and hollers from the crowd. After several rounds of posing and flexing, newcomer Bernard Opoku reigned supreme (despite an apparent aversion to facing front!). Lennox Cumberbatch was a close second, and teenager Krishna Brijlall impressed by grabbing third place in his first ever competition. This category did produce the biggest surprise of the evening, however, when 51 year-old crowd favourite Lerry Symons was left off the podium. The crowd absolutely loved Symons’ attitude infused display, but apparently the judges had eyes for younger muscles.Marina Jean-Pierre took the prize for the top Female Bodybuilder, with Vonika Washington securing second place. In the last category of the evening, veteran Jeftha Miller continued his dominance in the Men’s Bodybuilding group, keeping young Deon Brangman Jr. at bay for at least one more year.In the end, the near capacity crowd was satisfied with the show, whether their friend or family member won, placed, or even just participated. The show itself was a testament to what hard work, discipline, and determination can do.
