because KBB supporters are watching and your name might appear on the group's new "report board''.

Thanks to a loan secured with the help of Gosling Brothers Limited, Keep Bermuda Beautiful will be setting up its headquarters on Bermuda House Lane.

The offices will be manned by a team of volunteers.

Anyone who sees a person litter can report it to the headquarters, making sure to give a licence plate number and/or description of the litterer and where and when the offence occurred, KBB president Mr. Barry Brewer said yesterday.

The volunteers will post the licence plate numbers of litter and environmental offenders on the "report board'', he said. And if the offender was seen littering in their company car or truck, their employer will be notified.

He said the group is even thinking about taking things a step further and publishing the names or licence plates of repeat offenders in the media and giving them to Police to follow up on.

"The courts are really not acting as a deterrent -- they don't give the full $1,000 fine and only about 14 litterers are being dealt with a year,'' Mr.

Brewer said. "Maybe the reason is that the Police aren't bringing them in because they don't think its important enough.'' Mr. Brewer said before repeat offenders' names could be published though, KBB would have to look into the legal aspects of it.

He added there are also a number of technical aspects KBB will have to look at before the idea is implemented, such as more than one person being the driver of a reported vehicle.

Mr. Brewer said the new headquarters would be the "rebirth'' of KBB, enabling it to "start moving forward again''.

However, before the offices are up and running, a team of volunteers is needed.

Mr. Brewer said KBB is hoping someone will volunteer to man the office on a full-time basis. "It would be a very challenging and exciting job,'' he said.

If no one volunteers for the job KBB will have to wait until it has the funds to hire a full-time administrator, he said.
