Alleged impostor appears in court

A man who allegedly pretended to be politician Michael Dunkley appeared in Magistrates' Court to face fraud charges.

Maxwell Sinclair Roberts, 37, of no fixed abode, faced two indictable charges when he appeared in court on Wednesday of knowingly and fraudulently using Michael Dunkley's driver's licence and fraudulently writing a bank draft to the amount of $1,205,866.21 in the name of Michael Dunkley.

The incidents happened on November 25.

Roberts was not required to enter a plea to the charges as they must be heard in Supreme Court.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman objected to bail for Roberts.

Defence Llewelyn Peniston told the court the defendant was unwell.

"I ask for a mention date as soon as possible because the defendant is plagued with a serious kidney ailment and to remand him may not serve his purpose," he said.

Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves denied bail and set a January 7 mention date.
