Tara Lambert's praise for sister after tough win
Tara Lambert and Gavin Manders dominated both the Ladies and Men's singles this past weekend at the WER Joell Memorial tennis tournament at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium, defeating opponents Jacklyn Lambert and Andy Bray respectively.
It was the second successive time the two pairs have played each other in their respective finals, with Tara and Manders coming out on top in both showdowns.
Lambert made sure that their was still a rivalry in Ladies tennis as she saw off sister Jacklyn in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday to lay claim to her second successive 'Double', having claimed the doubles title with her sister as well.
She won both the single and doubles titles at the Argus Open with Jacklyn, while the pair also teamed up in this tournament as well.
Playing in less then ideal conditions, with gusts making it a nightmare on the court, Tara took the initiative and seized the moment to win her second title of her 2009 campaign.
"I have to admit it was a tough win," said Tara. "Both of us were frustrated by the very windy conditions, but some one had to win.
"Jacky played really well and it could have easily turned and been her victory."
"The weather made it frustrating. The wind made it very difficult to anticipate the balls direction.
"There was hardly ever a true bounce, one moment the ball is there then it changes direction suddenly with the wind.
"We both started to resort to using drop shots and lobs being that everything else either flew out or went in the net, but we had to remember that we were all playing in the same conditions."
Big sister didn't have it all her way in the match with her younger sibling taking the first set 6-2.
Showing confidence and belief in her game, Tara held her nerve and won the second set by the same score line as she lost the first, setting up a tense third and decisive set.
And it was big sister who emerged victorious to level the series at two apiece in both head-to-head matchups as well as titles.
"It was a roller coaster ride, Jacky won the first set pretty easily 6-2, then things turned and I took the second 6-2, and the third 6-3.
"It is always nice to team up with my sister and win titles (doubles). We do have fun and that's what its all about, otherwise what's the point.
"I think both Jacky and I did well taking home two titles each in the tournament.
"I'm very proud of her."
The tennis siblings have lifted all four singles titles this year with Jacklyn taking home the Bermuda Open and Pomander Gate Open and Tara laying claim to the Argus and WER Joell Memorial.
They both lifted a 'double' of some sort over the weekend with Jacky winning the mixed doubles with Manders and Ladies doubles with her sister.
With the win Tara will take a well-deserved rest from the local circuit to focus on things off the court.
"As I said, this is it for me for a little while. I plan to focus on my coaching over at Elbow Beach with my family, continue to work on our Junior and Adult Programs and spend time with my daughter, Samara, who already thinks she can play.
"Maybe she'll be another tennis champ if she chooses, it's all up to her."
"I would also like to say on the players behalf that it is an honour to play in the WER Joel Memorial Tennis Tournament as Mr Joell did so much to help with the growth of the sport."
In the Men's final, Gavin Manders continued to show why he is the number one ranked player after he swept aside Andy Bray in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 for the second straight tournament.
There should be no disputing who is number one after the recent form of Manders, who hasn't lost a singles match in both domestic and international play, and beating his closest competitor in back to back finals.
Having to wait for his opponent, Manders seemed to have a one tracked mind and he played his usual solid strokes and strategy to his advantage.
Earl Leader defeated Wilf Gonsalves in the Men's Senior Singles final, while Manders and Jacklyn won the Mixed doubles and the Lambert sister winning the Ladies doubles. Bray and Julian Pinot won the Men's doubles.
