Butler named Road Safety Council head
Former sports player and coach Ianthia Butler has been named as the new chairperson of the Road Safety Council.Ms Butler will now lead the council in its mission to encourage more respectful and responsible driving on the Island’s roads.At a press conference this afternoon, the former women’s softball player said: “I have never been a person who seeks the spotlight or even desires it.“My focus will be to drive down the message that road safety is a community concern and requires community effort.”She said the council - made up of professionals from the Bermuda Fire Service, Bermuda Police Service, Public Works department and the Transport Control Department - was tasked with listening to the public’s concerns.It was also charged with advising the Transport Minister on its findings and putting forth suggestions for change when necessary, Ms Butler said.“You have heard us say: don’t drink and drive, slow down, fasten your helmet correctly, and don’t drive while talking on your cell phone yes, these messages are important.“We also want to encourage the individual responsibility of each driver-rider.“You have the ability to keep yourself as safe as possible on our roads by focusing on the driving task at all times.’”Ms Butler will take over the role from National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief.Mr Perinchief was appointed as Road Safety Council chairman at the beginning of the year, before he was made a Government minister.
