Terry learns about Russia on tall ship
While many Bermudians have chosen to sail on the Spirit of Bermuda, others decided to try something different and immerse themselves in a foreign nautical culture.
Twenty-four-year-old Terry Sousa did just that when he hopped on the Russian Kruzenshtern.
Having spent several months traveling around Spain, Terry thought sailing home as part of the Tall Ship Atlantic Challenge would be the perfect way to end his adventure. He joined the festival at it's first port in Vigo, Spain.
This is not his first time on a Tall Ship. He said: "In 2000 I sailed on the Picton Castle and from meeting people on the ship and them telling me their stories of traveling it enticed me to go again."
Despite spending a month on the Canadian ship Picton Castle, Terry said the Russian ship has been quite different. There are approximately 140 sailors on board, all of whom are Russian, The majority of them are aged 15 and are sailing as part of their cadet training.
He said: "It's been a huge cultural shock because it is all Russians, very few speak English, so my Russian is improving! I figured I should take the opportunity now because in a few years I may not be able to do this again.
"One thing I have realised from this experience is no matter what nationality you are you tend to have a few things in common."
Despite not being a member of the Spirit of Bermuda crew Terry said he has been made to feel welcome and is proud to be representing his country in the international sailing event.
"As soon as I got to the port I went over to see the Spirit," he said. "I saw the three masts and it was like home. When I stepped on to the ship I was handed some fish chowder. It's definitely become a floating embassy for the Bermudian."
Terry's ship in the corrected time category finished third in the provisional race results.
Having spent more than a month wtih his Russian crewmates Terry is planning to return the favour. "I am looking forward to showing them my country and I am sure it will be different for the.
"It's been a great experience for me and the others to see Spain and get to know others from around the world while participating in this great event.
"But I am looking forward to going home and seeing my family, 26 days at sea without close friends and family can be tough."
