Health Council gets new chief executive

The new Bermuda Health Council, which will coordinating the delivery of affordable and accessible health care, has its first chief executive officer.

Former Accountant General Anthony Richardson's appointment was announced yesterday at a press conference where it was stated that he will take up the job in September.

The Health Council will be responsible for regulating, coordinating and enhancing the delivery of health services in Bermuda and Mr. Richardson, currently working at the Bank of Bermuda, will report to the Council, which is made up of doctors, insurers, hospital officials and patients.

The Council will also be responsible for regulating the price of drugs sold to the public and conducting research on the subject of public health.

Mr. Richardson, who was Accountant General from 1999 to 2002 and is also chairman of the Hospitals Board, is currently vice president and senior relationship manager in corporate banking at the Bank of Bermuda.

"His knowledge and depth of experience will certainly be beneficial to the Council as we achieve lasting substantial systemic improvements in the health system," Council chairman Dr. Michael Bradshaw said. "Mr. Richardson's distinguished career in both the private and public sectors will richly contribute to the important and innovative work that the Council has to do."

Health Minister Patrice Minors said: "This is a step closer to my vision of affordable, accessible, quality health care for the residents of Bermuda. I know that (Mr. Richardson) not only brings his professional acumen but he also brings a genuine commitment to the people of this community."

Mr. Richardson will work to bring about health reform and will be responsible for putting together the executive management team in the council's executive offices and for providing leadership and direction to this team as it conducts business of the Council.

Asked about his knew appointment he said: "I really believe this opportunity is unique.

"It doesn't matter how much money you have or your background it is a field in which we all have to participate," he said.

With responsibility for coordinating the entire health system, Mr. Richardson said he believed he would be able to have a good input.

"We have a unique opportunity to address some long standing issues and to promote collaborative sustainable solutions," he said. "I look forward to building and developing a team that will work with the Health Council to make this happen."
