Over 20 Bermuda students from the Centre for Talented Youth (CTY) will be attending the John Hopkins University Summer Programme which takes place throughout the US this summer.

Between June 29 and July 18, the Bermudians will study a variety of subjects, taking one course over three weeks — each class meeting all day from Monday to Friday.

Each class will have one instructor and instructional assistant.

CTY is an affiliate of the John Hopkins Centre for Talented Youth which offers programmes across the US, UK and Hong Kong. Their goal is to offer students “challenging educational opportunities to develop intellect.”

Over the three weeks, the 21 students cover the equivalent of a college semester’s worth of material with fast-paced science courses, covering a year’s worth of high school material.

“We believe that working hard and having fun are not mutually exclusive. CTY strives to create an intellectually engaging environment that energises its students,” said CTY Registrar Shanika Cunningham.

“The courses we offer are meant to be difficult, and the students work hard. It is that level of rigour which makes the experience so rewarding.

“Both in and out of class, students are encouraged to try new things, consider different points of view, and take an active role in forming and maintaining a community that celebrates learning and values bright students for who they are.

“Many students who have attended CTY’s summer programmes tell us that the experience literally changed their lives.

“CTY’s inclusive environment gave them a new sense of belonging where they can just be themselves.

“For others, CTY provided the opportunity to study topics and ideas they never knew existed.

“For still more, CTY made them better writers, stronger critical thinkers, able scientists, or more inquisitive researchers.

“Johns Hopkins University CTY summer programmes have had a profound and lasting effect on countless bright young people from across the country and around the world.”

The students taking part in the programme are: Sacred Basden, Sabree Botelho, Andrew Budge, Neil Budge, Clevon Cunningham Jr, Rachel Daly, Taj Donville-Outerbridge, Cameron Footé, Mammen Joseph, Rupert Lunn, Lara Nash, Kyrie Partfitt, Lara Pitcher, Ayo-Oluwa Salawu, Busayo Salawu, Maximilian Santiago, Kirk Stapff, Halle Teart, Ashlee-Rose Wilson, Wyatt Woloshyn and Christia Wright.

The courses will be held in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and California.
