Westgate inmate was as 'high as a kite' - claim
Shadow National Security Minister Michael Dunkley claimed today that a Westgate prisoner was as "high as a kite" when seen by visiting members of a committee on crime. He was speaking in the Senate and also said that an inmate had to be picked up by jet ski after being released from Westgate because the former inmate couldn't travel through Somerset due gang affiliations.Sen Dunkley said he had previously spoken about his concerns about cellphones and drugs getting into Westgate. He said members of the Joint Select Committee on Crime visited the prison and told him that one inmate was “as high as a kite”.Sen Dunkley said the Country needed to speak about the increase in anti-social behaviour and the impact it was having on our correctional facilities. He said: “This is a challenge within the prison system and we need to deal with it.”Prisons Commissioner Edward Lamb : "I would posit that Senator Dunkley has his facts a little skewed as they relate to an inmate leaving Westgate on a jet ski."We in Corrections daily strive to ensure a safe and secure environment in our facilities. This is a constant challenge for us but we are diligent and relentless in our efforts to maintain very high standards of security."We in Corrections welcome feedback from the public on any concerns they might have but, perhaps it would have been more productive for Senator Dunkley to raise his concerns about an inmate he perceived to be high at the time it allegedly occurred rather than months later."
