Evergreen Roque shows class is permanent

Veteran driver Eddie Roque had the fastest time at Vesey Street at the weekend.

Harness stalwart Eddie Roque rolled back the years to record the fastest time at Vesey Street at the weekend. The 62-year-old driver, who had a hip replaced last year, stopped the clock at 1.04 flat competing in the Free for All to prove that age is just a number.Roque, who has been involved in the sport for decades, achieved the feat with GV Crystal Ball. After making a slow start to the season the veteran driver reckons the best is yet to come from his ten-year-old stud.“I don’t think he will be as fast as Big Red Machine ... that’s an exceptional horse. But he will get faster,” Roque said.As for his most recent performance at the track, the veteran driver said: “Considering the weather it wasn’t a bad day. I have been second fastest quite a few times this year but I got lucky Big Red Machine wasn’t there.”Track record holder Big Red Machine did not compete at the weekend as owner and driver Colin Mello was reportedly out sick.Roque attributes his recent success to the time he puts in with his horses.“Harness racing is all about time,” he added. “If you don’t put the time in you don’t get results.”When asked how much longer does he intend to race before he hangs up his gear, Roque, who turns 63 next month, replied: “I want to keep doing it as long as I can because it keeps me occupied and also helps me to keep my sanity.“I like the sport and competing and it’s something that I have always done. I have a little bit of spark left, but not a whole lot.”Roque reckons harness racing has a bright future and is encouraged to see promising drivers such as Darico Clarke, Catrina Stephens and Tyler Lopes making steady progress in the sport.Lopes underlined his enormous potential by claiming victory with Micheal DeCosta’s colt Track Patrol in the Free for All, while his younger sibling and rookie driver Brandon Lopes won two heats in the 1:12 1:14 time bar competing with his grandfather’s (David Lopes) mare LA Erma Time.“I am super pleased to see these young drivers coming through,” added Roque, who also races in the US during the summer months. The harness stalwart applauds those who continue to aid in the development of future generations of drivers from behind the scenes.“It’s great to have people still out there like Micheal DeCosta, Brenda Cordoza and Noel (Chopper) Jones because they are the ones who supply horses for these kids to drive,” Roque said.Meanwhile, others thriving at Vesey Street at the weekend included John Flood (Fantastic Five), Zinho Cooper (Return to Sender), Thomas Whited (American Treat), Arthur Hurst (Colonel’s J), David Burrows Jr (I’m So Special), Keith Woodley (Bruna’s Girl) and Andy Stoneham (What A Sensation) who were all double heat winners.Stoneham’s colt ran a 1:09/3 in the 1:09/4 1:1¼ division to get a leg into the next time bar.
