Former Senate President Alf Oughton will receive this year’s Salute to Service Award from Bermuda Health Foundation.Mr Oughton is being honoured for his community work, in particular for producing the Health Care Review Report in 1996 which made recommendations including better healthcare for seniors and the creation of a health council.In his professional career at Belco, Mr Oughton worked his way through the ranks to president and CEO before retiring in 1992; he was appointed a Senator the following year and was Senate President for ten years from 1998 before retiring.He will be presented with the accolade at the Foundation’s ninth annual Salute to Service Award Luncheon on Friday, June 24, at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Previous recipients include Eugene Harvey, Reginald Burrows, Clarence James and Bruce Barritt.The foundation, which was founded by former Premier Ewart Brown and his brothers Philip Butterfield and Vincent Hollinsid, will also present scholarship awards to successful applicants during the luncheon; it has presented scholarship awards totalling more than $300,000 over the years.Foundation chairman Mr Butterfield said: “Although Bermuda and the rest of the world continue to experience the affects of the global recession, the Bermuda Health Foundation is committed to assisting those Bermudians who are interested in careers in the medical field.“Last year we received a record number of applicants and as usual it was difficult for us to select four students to receive our annual scholarship.”Last year’s scholarship recipients were Ger’dai Hassell, Jasmine Whitehurst, Laura Robinson, qualifying for a PhD in forensic psychology at the University of Birmingham, and Aaronae Evans, a nursing student at Atlanta Metropolitan College.Ms Hassell and Ms Whitehurst had to return their scholarships after also being awarded Bermuda Government scholarships. The foundation later awarded a partial scholarship to Keenan VanPutten, a nursing student at Hampton University.
