Double Time continued her rapid ascent to the top of the harness racing pecking order after blazing a new Bermuda-bred record with driver Candyce Martins in the bike at Vesey Street on Saturday night.

Martins and her eight-year-old mare led the field across the wire in the opening heat of the Free for All in 1:02/2.

The time was a fifth of a second faster than the previous Bermuda -bred record held by Mello Family’s mare, ThisBabyRocks. It was also a new lifetime best and the fastest any pony has been clocked this season.

“It feels nice to break the Bermuda-bred record and I’m very impressed with my pony,” an elated Martins said. “I had the rail and just let her run and do her thing. She enjoyed it and I didn’t push her.

“It was a nice start. She went out and was running straight from the start and ran a steady race for the whole race.”

Track conditions were ideal for fast times in spite of the inclement weather.

“At the start of the night the weather wasn’t good and it wasn’t looking like there would be any fast times,” Martins said. “But the track dried up and it actually ended up being really nice.”

Double Time’s record breaking exploits exceeded the 19-year-old’s expectations.

“We really didn’t except too much,” Martins added. “Just let her run and do her thing and that’s what we did and that’s how it worked out for us.”

Martins’s pony punched well above its weight having just moved up to the Free for All, featuring the island’s fastest ponies, the previous race day.

“I wasn’t sure if she would be able to keep up, or how it would turn out,” Martins said.“But she kept up just fine and made it seem like she does that every week. She loves to run and I’m just the passenger.

“I’m just happy that she has made a good step into Free for All. She didn’t get up into it and disappoint us.”

Martins is no stranger to records having guided Robert and Tyler Lopes’ Indiana-bred pony, Google Me, to the overall track and mare records which stands at 1:01/1.

“I will enjoy the records while I have them,” Martins said.

“But records are made to be broken.”

When asked if she believed Double Time is capable of eclipsing Google Me’s records, Martins replied: “You never know.

“I just want her to be able to consistently run how she is running now and do good in Free for All.”
