Student pleads guilty to assault
A 16-year-old student pleaded guilty in Magistrates? Court on Thursday to causing grievous bodily harm and stealing a cellular phone.
Blaine Richardson of Tribe Road No. One, Warwick, admitted to causing grievous bodily harm to Bervin Lambert in Sandys on February 19.
Richardson also admitted to stealing Mr. Lambert?s phone, valued at $380.
Crown counsel Paula Tyndale said at around 8.15 p.m. that day, Mr. Lambert was inside the bus-shelter by the Maxi-Mart in Sandys speaking to someone on his phone when ?Richardson charged at him and punched him in the left eye?.
?Richardson punched Mr. Lambert in the nose and jaw,? she said.
Mr. Lambert fought back before running into the Maxi-Mart, she said, but as he was leaving his phone fell to the ground. When he returned a few minutes later the phone was gone.
Police arrived and commenced a search on Fairhaven Lane, Sandys, where they found Richardson sitting on some steps, she said.
Mr. Lambert?s phone was found in Richardson?s possession when he was searched at Somerset Police Station.
Richardson admitted to assaulting Mr. Lambert and stealing the phone, she said.
Mr. Lambert, who is 22 years old, had a fractured nose and a chipped tooth.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner granted Richardson bail of $2,000 and placed him under a 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. curfew.
?This is a serious mugging-type offence,? Mr. Warner said.
Another student, Barrington Smith, 17, pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to Mr. Lambert at the same place and time. He was granted bail of $2,000 to appear in Magistrates? Court on May 31 for trial.
