Tribute concert for a beloved grandfather

When Thomas Van Dyck attended the funeral here of his beloved grandfather, DeForest (Shorty) Trimingham, in March, 2007 he expressed a wish to take part in a memorial music concert in Bermuda when his schedule permitted.

On Friday, November 21, his wish will come true when he and viola player Stephanie Fong will present a lunchtime concert at the Anglican Cathedral on Church Street. The hour-long programme, featuring works by Bach, Beethoven, Rossini and Dittersdorf, will begin at 12.30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations to the Cathedral Organ Fund are invited.

Double bassist Mr. Van Dyck is an accomplished chamber musician who, in recent years, has become a regular performer with both the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the renowned Tanglewood Concert Series.

The late Bermudian sailor, parliamentarian and businessman was intensely proud of the successes of his three grandsons, of which Mr. Van Dyck is one, each of whom excelled in his chosen profession in the US, so it is with pride that the double bassist returns the compliment with a memorial concert.

Mr. Van Dyck, a resident of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, is an active chamber and orchestral musician in the US and elsewhere, and is a recipient of the Maurice Schwarz Prize at Tanglewood. He is also a member of the conductorless East Coast Chamber Orchestra, which tours internationally.

Ms Fong hails from Oakland, California, and holds degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Conservatory, and Rice University. In addition to appearances at numerous festivals, she has performed extensively as a chamber musician with various artists.

Named a Pressler Scholar in 2000,as a member of the Kalais String Quartet she is also a Fischoff Chamber Music Competition winner.

Ms Fong is currently freelancing in the Greater Boston area, and performs regularly with the Boston Symphony, Portland Symphony, Indian Hill Symphony orchestras, as well as the Rhode Island Philharmonic.
