Quebec-born Rachelle Paquette has lived in Bermuda for the past 35 years, but it was not until she purchased a camera in June, 2008, that she began viewing what she calls "our God-given Island" in a more acute and appreciative way.

Tonight, viewers will have a chance to share her appreciation as Ms Paquette opens her first solo exhibition, 'Making A Difference', in the Bermuda Society of Arts' Studio A on the upper level of City Hall.

Not content to be just another 'aim and shoot' photographer, the self-taught mother-of-two, who is also a professional gospel singer, began experimenting with various programmes to enhance her images, and also learned how to create mixed media, something she found both challenging and rewarding.

Ms Paquette describes her style as "very conceptual", and says her influences range from everyday situations to rare life situations which she prefers to keep close to her heart.

Some of the creations are built in a complex way, using many layers and adjustments, and her use of colour is designed to be eye-catching. She loves shapes, and the light which gives her work form. "I enjoy the response to the colours, textures, and shapes of the design and I sense the presence of God with me during these times, sitting in silence, praying, praising and thanking Him for His creativity," she says. "Art is a universal language, and can be used to touch lives. Sharing my life with others has brought so much joy into my life."

She has performed extensively here and abroad for many years, and has cut CDs to give away as gifts.

She also wrote the calypso, 'Bermuda is the Place to Be,' which was played on local radio.

Now she describes her new-found love of photography as "a deeply engaging experience".

"Sharing my life with others has brought so much joy into my life, and meeting people every day with my camera in hand has opened up many doors to share my work. I believe in my heart that God has encouraged me to move forward, making a difference in my life, hence the title of my show."

A certified health care aide by profession, Ms Paquette says "real excitement" has been "rising up inside" her as she approached tonight's opening. "It's really great for a 61-year-old," she enthused. "Whatever age you are at, you are able to do something more than you have done. I am so glad that I was able to walk through the door and just do it."

The opening reception for 'Making a Difference' is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. this evening. Thereafter, the exhibition will continue through November 25. For further information telephone 292-3824.
