Dancers to celebrate 'amazing artists'
The Jackson School of Performing Arts will be showcasing the talents of its budding dancers at City Hall next week, when it hosts its 57th annual recital with a celebration of great artists and composers.
"With the passing of Michael Jackson last year, the teachers and I thought it would be a good idea to celebrate all of the amazing artists who have passed on," the School's partner and managing director, Jeanne Legere, says. "We are using everyone from Beethoven to Mr. Jackson, and we are calling it 'The Music Hall of Fame'.
"The children are dancing to artists they have never heard of before, which gives them a broader range of appreciation for all kinds of music. Barbara Frith is doing a whole tap section on Duke Ellkington, and Angelina Simas is doing a senior hip hop piece to Michael Jackson and James Brown."
The Jackson School was founded by Louise Jackson, MBE, JP, MP in 1953 with just 40 students. Mrs. Legere became a partner and managing director in 1999, and today about 500 students are enrolled.
The School prides itself on giving students both a strong technique and an appreciation for the arts, and Mrs. Legere says its success is due to its dedicated teachers.
Recital performances are on June 23, 24, 25 and 26 at 7 p.m. Tickets (adults $35, students $30) are available from the Jackson School office between 12 noon and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, and on line at bdatix.com
