Third seeds battle back
yesterday, overcoming a stubborn challenge from Diane Olchowik and Jerome Bradshaw, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 as the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational tournament continued at Coral Beach.
"We were that close,'' said a disappointed Bradshaw, holding two of his fingers firmly together. "We were up 5-4 and 15-40 on Barbara's serve, but she's a gutsy player and she fought back.'' Olchowik recovered from that match to later oust third seed Erika Hendriks 6-3, 6-4 in the women's open singles.
In other matches Lexi Petty won a hard-fought battle against Robin Zuill, 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 while Gene Whitman of the United States continued his winning ways with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-0 triumph over Michael Keyes.
Gill Butterfield and Sandy Frith Brown made short work of third seeds Margie Gottscho and Paul Perregaux to win a century mixed doubles match 6-1, 6-3.
