Top seeds suffer early exit
Top seeds tumbled on the opening day of the Minute Maid Junior Tennis Tournament at the WER Joell Stadium yesterday with both number one ranked players in the boys? under-10 and under-16 divisions crashing out.
In the boys? under-10 event, Christopher Rego played a steady game to win 8-3 over top seed and last year?s winner James Spence.
It marked the first time Rego had defeated his junior rival with Spence having consistently proved the stronger player in the past.
Rego now faces either Andrew Forgesson or Christian Parfitt in the next round.
Yesterday?s second upset saw Michael Skater defeat top seed Kevin Caza in the boys? under-16 event, Skater breezing to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
That result also marked Skater?s first win over Caza.
In other action, visiting player Andrew Rigby from Southport in England defeated Ryan Benevides in a hard fought three-set match in the boys? under-14 division.
Rigby won 3-6,6-2, 6-0 and will now face Neal Towlson, the number one seed.
Top junior Jack Keyes, meanwhile, advanced in both his matches in the boys? under-14 and under-16 groups.
