Live: New LF Wade International airport terminal opens
The new LF Wade passenger terminal formally opened this morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the facility.
Videos of the the opening and the arrival of the first aircraft to arrive at the $250 million terminal are both attached to this story - they are 1 and 2 on the photo slider.
Aaron Adderley, Skyport president, said the opening was a milestone in the history of the island as the former terminal - erected around 75 years ago - was well beyond its regular life expectancy.
He added that it was difficult for smaller airports to find investment as 80 per cent lose money.
Mr Adderley said: "We had to take a leap of faith into the unknown and today our faith and our perseverance has been rewarded."
The airport received its first departing passengers shortly before 10.30am - travellers on a chartered flight to the Azores - while the first arrivals are expected to land just before noon.

Meanwhile, the staff and operators of the Boulevard Cafe are saying farewell after 20 years in the old terminal - you can read the story here.
There are links here to today’s story in The Royal Gazette on the opening.
And a feature by Owain Johnston Barnes on how you as a passenger will depart and arrive at the airport is great reading. Click here for that story. There’s also a video attached to the feature by Owain and Kyle McNeil which is enjoyable viewing.
