Roman Catholic’s celebrates 60 years of their Diocese
The Catholic Church will this weekend celebrate its 60th Anniversary of its formal establishment in Bermuda.Catholic priests from Halifax, Nova Scotia have been serving the Island since 1843, but the first steps towards the Diocese in Hamilton only began in 1953.To celebrate the anniversary, Roman Catholic Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Nicola Girasoli will be visiting the Island, presiding over a Concelebrated Solemn Mass on Sunday at St Theresa’s Cathedral.A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Hamilton said: “The Nuncio, whose role can be described as a member of the Vatican Diplomatic Corps, represents the Pope before national governments for all the Antilles Episcopal Conference, which includes Bermuda.”During his visit, the Nuncio will attend a series of events, meet with Premier Craig Cannonier, and speak with those working in the Diocese.Other special guests will also be visiting the Island to celebrate the anniversary, including Archbishop Patrick Pinder of Nassau, Bahamas, Archbishop Anthony Mancini of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Bishop Douglas Crosby of Hamilton, Ontario.
