Bermuda now has 103 an active cases of the coronavirus as the Ministry of Health reported that ten more people tested positive yesterday.

The new cases were identified in 762 test results that came back to the ministry yesterday and bring the total number of confirmed cases to 340.

Two people are in hospital, including one in critical care.

The latest figures included seven cases that were transmitted on the island with a known contact or source – four were under quarantine as close contacts of known cases and three were linked to known clusters.

The other three cases are under investigation.

A ministry spokeswoman added: “These cases are among residents with no history of travel or any currently identified links to other known cases or clusters.”

The seven-day average of Bermuda’s real time reproduction number is now 1.41 and the island’s country status is “clusters of cases”.

Kim Wilson, the health minister, said: "As I mentioned during last night's press conference, there seems to be a discrepancy between the school environment and children's extracurricular activities in terms of ensuring protective health measures are followed.

“In school, children are kept in their year group and class bubbles – something which the schools and teachers have worked extremely hard to maintain.

“But in sports clubs and during other extracurricular activities, I am hearing that children from many schools are meeting and interacting socially.

“This is making the bubbles that are created at school much less useful in preventing spread.

“Therefore I am appealing to parents and organisations that run these activities to please be mindful of this and act in accordance with the health guidelines posted on coronavirus.gov.bm.”

She added: “Given the health risks that come from mixing large groups of children from different schools and households, the Ministry of Health is currently reviewing its policies regarding holiday camps for children, given the current increase in cases of Covid-19 on the island."

Nine people with Covid-19 have died and 228 people have recovered from the coronavirus.

The average age of all confirmed cases is 47 and the people range from a baby to a 101-year-old.

A total of 129 cases have come to Bermuda from overseas.

There have been 163 cases transmitted on the island with a known contact or source and 21 with an unknown contact or source.

Another 27 cases are under investigation.
