Police survive -- but draw leaves Cuts facing the drop
Police 228-3 Willow Cuts 18-1 Police moved to safety in the Open League over the weekend when they added to Saturday's win at Sea Breeze Oval with a draw against Willow Cuts at Police Field yesterday.
That gives Willow Cuts just one last chance to avoid the drop, as they meet Bailey's Bay this weekend in the final match. The only team Cuts can catch is Cleveland who have already completed their season.
Cuts looked largely disinterested in yesterday's match as Police made them work hard for their wickets. Century-maker Dennis Archer shared in an opening stand of 76 with Donovan Livingston and then added 103 with Stevie Lightbourne (33) for the second wicket.
Archer scored 100 of the first 165 runs, his century coming off eight fours in exactly three hours.
He was stumped the first delivery after tea for 110 with Lightbourne following in the next over before Police declared during a stand of 47 between Ferdinand Thorne (23) and Dwayne Leverock (24).
Three Willow Cuts bowlers shared the 53 overs, with Richard Basden taking two for 97 from 27 unchanged overs while Rodney Fubler took one for 72 from 13.
Vivian Simons conceded 41 in his 14 overs.
Having returned from a heavy shower just a few minutes earlier, the teams went off for good due to bad light as the final 20 overs were about to begin. A draw would have been the obvious result with Cuts 18-1 in reply to the Police total.
Police moved ahead of Cuts in the standings on Saturday when they beat Bailey's Bay by 134 runs. Police scored 216 in 65.4 overs and then dismissed a weakened Bay side for just 82.
Leverock was high man for Police with 45 while Thorne scored 42, Roger Blades 32 and opener Peter Philpott 21.
Noel Gibbons, who opened the Bay bowling and bowled 33 unchanged overs with six maidens, claimed five for 87 while Ricky Hill took three for 35 and Anthony Braithwaite two for 37.
Freston Hurdle claimed six wickets and Blades four, including a first ball lbw against Gibbons.
Western Stars and St. George's played to a tame draw at St. John's Field on Saturday, with Albert Steede smashing a century (102) in the Stars total of 227.
Cleon Scotland supported with 54 as Clevie Wade took three for 34 from 14 overs and Herbie Bascome and David Adams took two wickets apiece. With Clay Smith going behind the stumps, Dean Minors had a rare chance to bowl and claimed one wicket with his medium pacers.
St.George's replied with 118-2 at the close with Minors scoring 69 and Dexter Smith 42 not out. The pair put on 94 for the first wicket.
Both teams were understrength and were mostly going through the motions in a match of little importance.
Stars included two members of their under-12 team, Jekon Edness and Taurean Manders, who are the sons of team members Anthony and Andre Manders.
