Island Masters make splash in Toronto
Two Bermudian Masters swimmers were among 600 who took part in the Ontario Masters Provincial Championships at the Etobicoke Olympium in Toronto last weekend.
And between them Chris Smith, 72, and Colleen Nelson, 55, collected seven individual gold medals, four silver and three relay golds.
Smith, who swims with the Trillium Y Masters Team in Toronto, struck gold in the 100 metres breaststroke, 100 and 200 metres Individual Medley and won silver in the 100 and 200 metres freestyle.
He was also a member of the TYMS mixed (2 men and 2 women) 4x200 metres freestyle team which established a Canadian record in the 200-year-plus relay. In the latter event, the ages of all four swimmers have total 200 or more.
Smith also swam with his TYMS team-mates in a 240-years-plus mixed relay, setting a new Canadian record in the 4x100 metres medley in which he swam the freestyle anchor leg.
In addition, he swam the freestyle leg of a 240-years-plus mixed medley relay, setting an Ontario record.
Nelson, who trains in both Bermuda and Duncan, British Columbia, where she spends the summer months, won four individual gold medals in the 400 metres IM and the 100, 400, and 800 metres freestyle. She picked up silvers in the 100 metres IM and 200 metres freestyle, missing gold in the latter by just two one hundredths of a second.
Five of her six times were lifetime bests and two of her times Canadian records for women aged between 55 and 59.
