FORMER Bermuda resident Gwynne Williams is back on the Island tomorrow to run the United States Soccer Federation/National Soccer Coaches of America

This is a brand new award, aimed at plugging the hole as to how best to deal with specialist skills of goalkeepers within a regular coaching programme.

Williams has worked on the syllabus for the award along with the head of the USSF goalkeeping staff, former Fulham goalkeeper Peter Mellor.

Of course, Williams is no stranger to Bermuda, having taught at Sandys Sec, MSA and Saltus Junior during his time on the Island. He was also the coach of Hotels International, and the goalkeeping coach of the Bermuda national squad for the 1990 World Cup. He is currently Assistant Director of recreation for the town of Wellington (Florida), and is a member of the USSF Goalkeeping staff.

Local coaches are encouraged to sign up for the course at the BFA Offices. The cost for the course is $75 (this is the same as it would be in the US). It will be held at Saltus tomorrow, starting at 9 a.m. and runs through to 4 p.m.

All coaches are urged to attend, as are all senior goalkeepers.

SAILING **** JOHN Corless and Shelagh Tasker continue to struggle against a quality fleet at the J24 World Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

After seven races Tasker stands 70th and Corless 72nd out of 73 boats.

Yesterday, saw Tasker place 64th in race six and 71st in race seven, while Corless finished 70th and 69th respectively.

The results left Tasker on 376 points, while Corless has totalled 400, well off the pace being set by American Brad Read, who leads the fleet with a minuscule 18 points.

Under moderate 10-15 knot breezes Tasker got off to a reasonable start for the first outing, rounding the first mark in 49th place, but dropped back steadily, falling to 51 at the second mark, 68th at the fourth before rebounding to place 65.

Meanwhile, Corless made the first rounding in 69th place before dropping to 72nd and ending 70th.

Race seven saw more of the same, with Tasker off to a reasonable start, going around the first mark in 49th place, only to fall back as the race progressed.

Corless never rose higher than 70th during the entire outing.

Action continues today in Narragansett Bay.

RUGBY **** RUGBY kicked off with the traditional Sandys Boat Club tournament at Malabar giving offering much promise for the season.

Considering the time of year it was enlightening to see such a high manner of play, with all games keenly contested.

Ultimately it boiled down to Teachers versus Police, with the former, under the captaincy of Henry Adderley, edging out Police 8-3 to retain the title.

Bobby Hurdle, in his first appearance since returning from Worcester RFC in England, scored the only try of the match.

Teachers went undefeated -- three games -- through the event, consisting of 30-minute games, while Police won two and lost one, Mariners won one and lost two, and Renegades lost all three outings.

CRICKET **** IN a most startling turn of event, Bermuda Press rose from the ashes to impart a stunning two wicket defeat upon Royal Gazette during the annual inter-company match on Saturday at Shelly bay Field.

The winning runs were scored off the bat of Dwayne Richardson with but three balls left.

Luckless through most of the past decade, BP rode the fortune of a brilliant bowling spell from Anthony Richardson and the steady bat of Warren Iris.

Richardson first held up the hosts charge for a sizable total, taking six wickets at a cost of 33 runs through his medium pace deliveries. Included in the haul was a most bizarre dismissal when the batsman ducked under a full toss, only to have the ball drop onto the stumps.

Harold Minors, despite offering four chances, topped the batting for Royal Gazette with 29, while assisted by the likes of Patrick Bean (17), Jonathan Kent (16) and Ivan Clifford (14).

Iris emerged as the batting star, compiling 33 during a disciplined knock.

Meanwhile, Randy DeShields added a vital 20 and skipper Chris Leverock 19 not out, as BP finally conquered what had appeared an insurmountable hurdle.

The victory marked the first for BP since 1992 and just their second since 1980.

Bobby Hurdle: scored decisive try for Teachers.
