Keeper Darrell denies Zebras

Devonshire Colts continued to dig themselves out of the relegation zone last night, notching a much needed victory over plummeting PHC at Somerset.

A goal each by skipper Ellington Weldon and Jermel Belboda late in the second half gave Colts the win which helped them leap two places in the tables to fifth, while the now seventh-placed Zebras hover precariously close to the danger area.

PHC would have an argument for deserving at least a share of the spoils as they dominated much of the contest, but a lack of finishing touch and stunning heroics by Colts goalkeeper Randy Darrell denied them any such fortune.

From the outset a makeshift PHC unit missing three Bermuda Under-23 squad members attacked with fury, peppering Darrell with shots.

Jamal Robinson was the first to test the former national team 'keeper, streaking down the right flank and unleashing a low blast that Darrell smothered in the 10th minute. Winston Trott followed moments later with another hard drive from long range that grazed the crossbar.

Colts did not get their first scoring chance until the 18th minute as Marvin Lewis skidded an angled shot just wide.

Action continued to favour PHC immediately following the interval, but their run of dominance would soon end.

Weldon sparked the revival in the 74th minute. After Lewis had shredded a sloppy defence, weaving his way near the top of the penalty area, he passed to the onrushing Weldon to slam home under the body of Williams.

The cheers had barely died when Jermel Belboda out-paced two defenders to get onto a deep clearance up the middle and give Williams no chance with his right foot shot.

PHC halved the deficit via the penalty spot as Trott converted following an infringement by Darrell on Blenn Bean.
