Michael Way was prevented from winning his fourth tournament of the year when American Gregg Frigerio defeated him 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the Grotto Bay Open on Saturday.

Way -- clearly the number one player in Bermuda this year -- had won the Heineken Bermuda Open, All Bermuda Open and Pomander Gate tournaments and won an exhibition match against Donald Evans leading up to the east end tournament.

He was the defending men's A singles champion at Grotto Bay.

Gill Butterfield, meantime, playing singles for the first time in a Big Five tournament this year, defeated Sheila Gomez to win the women's A singles crown. Butterfield won the first set 6-2 and was leading in the second 4-3 when Gomez retired.

Butterfield and Wendy Frost won the women's doubles title over Ailsa Campbell and Jacqui White with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

Proving this was truly her tournament, Butterfield then teamed up with Mike Curry to win the mixed doubles title over Barbara Lambert and Sam Maybury, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.

Eugene Simmons defeated Michael Levon 6-4, 6-4 to claim the men's B singles crown while Maryleigh Chasty surprised top seed Lexi Petty 6-1, 6-4 to win the women's B singles title.

Monty Nearon and Mike Curry combined to beat Roger Marshall and Martin Zolnai 7-5, 6-7 (7-4), 6-4 to take the men's doubles title while Bill Nearon and Oliver Bain toppled defending champions Ray Knight and Bernd Miller 6-1, 6-4 in the senior men's doubles.

Denise Kyme and Wendy Salvia defeated Juanita Allchin and Erika Hendriks 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) to take the senior women's doubles title.

David Furbert beat Oliver Bain 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 to win the senior men's singles crown.
