Youth faces heavy fine for having drugs near school zone
A Warwick teenager has been slapped with a $2,300 fine for possessing drugs near a school.
Andre Gray, 16, of Jones Village, yesterday pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to possessing cannabis and cocaine on May 22.
Police prosecutor Insp. Anthony Mouchette said Police officers saw a group of youths standing by the vegetable stand on Stadium Lane, in Warwick at 10:36 p.m.
The officers could smell that drugs were being used and approached Gray, who was standing away from the main group.
Gray was holding an extinguished home-made cigarette which contained .22 grams of cannabis.
And the officers found three brown paper twists containing .53 grams of 83-percent pure cocaine on the ground by his feet.
Yesterday, Magistrate Edward King told Gray: "There's no excuse for you youngsters to come before the courts on drugs charges. You have been taught to say no to drugs.'' Mr. King fined Gray $150 for possessing cocaine and $150 for possessing cannabis.
Gray was also made to pay an extra $1,000 for each offence because he was in an increased penalty zone -- near to the Montessori School.
