In celebration of its 89th year the Kiwanis Club of St. George?s is spending one week reading to St. George?s Prep students.

The Kiwanis Club has adopted St. George?s Prep as one of its major projects this year because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Fabian.

In the release, president Harold Millett said: ?The club had a Tuesday start to the week-long celebration, when two of its members went to the St. George?s Prep and spent part of the afternoon reading to some of the classes.?

Mr. Millett said other events on the calendar during Kiwanis week included a speech by special guest, Deputy Governor Nick Carter (pictured), at its regular weekly dinner meeting. At the end of the week, members will gather for an all-day seminar and workshop, which has been designed to hone the skills of past, present and future club leaders.

The first Kiwanis Club was chartered in January, 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. In 2004, the club has grown to more than 8,500 clubs with some 300,000 members around the world.

The club?s continuing service is called ?Young Children ? Priority One? and under this theme each Kiwanis club is encouraged to sponsor significant projects that serve the special needs of children, from pre-natal development to the age of five.
