A Policeman accused of stalking the mother of his young daughter cross-examined her in court yesterday.

Robert Butterfield quizzed the complainant over a series of calls he claimed she made to him and also her allegation that he forced her into sex.

Butterfield, 36, of Old Military Road, St. George?s, denies one charge of stalking relating to the period July 1 to 25 2006. He elected to conduct his own defence after firing two lawyers previously engaged to represent him in the Magistrates? Court trial, which began last year and was adjourned.

Earlier in the case, the complainant alleged that Butterfield stalked her, verbally abused her and forced her into sex. Butterfield has earlier put the defence that the sex was consensual and the alleged incidents of him following her around stemmed from co-incidence because the pair lived in close proximity in St. David?s at the time.

Yesterday, reading from his phone bill, Butterfield put it to her that she made a series of calls from her father?s land-line number to his cell-phone number between the dates the stalking charge spans ? including one lasting 32 minutes on July 14.

The woman said she did not recall calling him at all. She told the court, however, that she did remember telling Butterfield she would call him ahead of time if he was going to have their baby the following day.

?I don?t remember calling him because he?d always show up at the door, but I do know we had that conversation,? she said.

Asked by Butterfield about the allegation he followed her around, she said she could not remember the dates but this stemmed from when she first arrived in Bermuda around June 20 last summer.

?Just going to the beach he would follow me. When I went to the market, he followed me,? she told Magistrate Juan Wolffe.

Butterfield then referred to evidence the woman gave on an earlier day of the trial that he forced her to have sex against her will on July 14.

In answer to questions from him about this, she said the incident happened after eight or nine o?clock one night at a time when she was exhausted. She said she had not called him and he had just turned up. She denied his assertions that she opened the door and let him in.

Butterfield also put it to her that after she opened the door she embraced him and told him she loved him.

?No I didn?t. I can tell you that right now, because I was exhausted. I did not,? she replied.

The woman agreed she did not report the allegation of forced sex at the time. She told the court this was because ?it?s personal and I didn?t want to do that. It?s not the first time that he?s forced me to have sex with him?.

She agreed she made several calls to the Police between July 21 and 26 regarding Butterfield?s behaviour.

?I believe that?s why we?re here,? she said, referring to the court proceedings.

Butterfield, who is on bail, is suspended from the Police service. The case continues.
