And the first to benefit could be PHC forward Steven Astwood who has been offered a one-year contract by First Division Preston North End.

According to Government House registrar Peter O'Brien, Astwood's application is the only one currently being considered by the UK Department of Employment as Preston have filed on his behalf.

Others who had been invited for trials in England had not yet been offered a contract.

"The Deputy Governor's office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have looked into the work permit situation and have spoken to the UK Department of Employment. Of the four players, only Steven Astwood's team, Preston, have applied for a work permit,'' said O'Brien.

He added: "No decision has yet been made on his permit, but if it is turned down, then his team can appeal. If that happens then we may take the matter further. In regards to other Bermuda players, no work permit applications were made.''
