VIP parade for hero Shaun
Monica's Mission neighbourhood tomorrow at noon.
But, no, the Manchester City striker has not fallen foul of the law, rather he's being given the red carpet treatment as a national hero following his most successful season in English football.
Goater, currently back home on vacation, will be the guest of honour in a motorcade that will take him, his wife Anita and mother Lynette, from his mother's home to the Premier's office (starting at 11.45 a.m.) and then onto City Hall. The ceremony at City Hall is scheduled to start at 12.30.
There, Goater will hear an address and proclamation from the Premier, which will follow opening remarks from the Minister of Youth, Sport and Recreation, Dennis Lister.
The Mayor of Hamilton, William Frith, Shadow Sports Minister, Patricia Gordon-Pamplin, and Goater will then speak, before the motorcade reassembles, this time heading to the Hamilton Princess Hotel for a 1.00 lunch in honour of the player who spent his early days more than 20 years ago playing at Pig's Field and then the `desert'.
Nowadays he plays in front of a packed house at Manchester City's Maine Road where fans chant his name. Next season he will visit the biggest grounds in England, such as Manchester United's Old Trafford where his professional career began and Arsenal's Highbury, and when he nets his first goal he will become the first Bermudian since Clyde Best in 1974-75 to score in England's top division.
During the luncheon, Goater's former coach, Harold (Doc) Dowling will also make remarks, as will the president of Bermuda Football Association, Neville Tyrrell, and North Village president, Rudolph Hollis.
The motorcade will be similar to one held last August for Bermuda's Pan-Am Games team which brought back three medals, including a gold by equestrienne MJ Tumbridge.
Sports Director Brenton Roberts believes the tribute for Goater is deserving after having played 12 years in England. His dream of playing in the Premiership is about to be realised after he led Manchester City's scoring last season with 29 goals. He was also voted the Player of the Year by the club's supporters.
"There are two reasons this is being done, the first for his achievements over the past 12 years and of reaching the pinnacle of any footballer's career, the Premier Division, and to wish him well as he enters that division,'' said Roberts yesterday.
"He had an outstanding season, led the division in scoring and was a major force in the team going up to the Premier Division. So his contributions have been sterling, not only in achieving the goal for the team but also his own personal goal of reaching the Premier Division.
"It's a sign of the dedication and commitment that he has made to the development of his skills in soccer over the years. He never lost sight of what he wanted to achieve.'' Roberts is urging the public to come out and show their appreciation.
"The motorcade will travel through the areas that were important in Shaun's development,'' said Roberts.
"It will go up Glebe Road, St. Monica's Road, Marsh Folly Road, Dutton Avenue and through Court Street to the Cabinet office.
"Then after meeting with the Premier, he will go via Front Street, Queen Steet and Church Street to City Hall.'' Shaun Goater: toast of the town.
