Boxing Day meal tradition continues with Covid-19 rules
A community activist will return to Court Street to deliver Christmas spirit on Boxing Day – for the 14th year in a row.
Regina Peniston said the Covid-19 pandemic had made the holiday meal even more important – even if it has altered how it will be delivered.
Ms Peniston said: “I just felt that all of us have been through a whirlwind this year. It has been so challenging and I didn’t feel like I should stop this year.
“I’m a little upset that we are not going to be able to have the same sort of interactions with the people, but I need to keep my volunteers safe and the clients safe.
“Everyone has been asking me if I would be back again this year and the answer is ’yes, but it’s going to be different’.”
She said she and other volunteers would set up tables in a parking area on Court Street to hand out helpings of Christmas favourites in previous years.
But Ms Peniston added, to stay in line with social distancing rules, volunteers would instead prepare take out containers of food at the nearby Heritage Worship Centre, which will be handed out from the sidewalk near the Jamaican Grill.
Other volunteers will deliver meals to people elsewhere.
Ms Peniston said: “Once they open the containers, they will see they have everything they need for a Christmas dinner.
“I am also hoping to get some vouchers donated to put in the bags for people so they have something for after Christmas too.”
