Montgomery prove to be a ?putt? above
Montgomery Country Club, led by their professional Frank Ferguson, triumphed in the net division of the annual Goodwill Tournament at Mid Ocean Golf Club yesterday.
The foursome of Ferguson, Alan Hedlund, Harry Leavy and Albert Feinberg went into yesterday?s final round with a six shot lead at the top of the leaderboard, having led the tournament since the conclusion of the second day.
And after recording an impressive 57 in the final round at Mid Ocean, they managed to maintain that lead over their nearest rivals, Country Club of Orange Park.
Over the four rounds the Montgomery Country Club team recorded net rounds of 60, 52, 61 and 57 at Port Royal, Belmont Hills, Tucker?s Point and Mid Ocean respectively, giving them an impressive net score of 230, or 52 under par for the tournament.
The team were relaxing in their hotel yesterday afternoon in preparation for their flight home tomorrow morning and were clearly delighted to have pulled off such an emphatic victory.
?52 under was a very good score, I have to admit, especially with the way the wind was blowing earlier in the week,? said Leavy.
?We scored really well at Belmont, but I think we all found the course a little short. But we shot 14 under at Mid Ocean today and we all played well, which was a fitting way to round off the trip.?
Leavy was reluctant to pick out one individual who had stood out during the week, arguing that it had been a complete team effort throughout.
?Time and time again if three of us were out of the hole, somebody would step up to the plate. We really supported each other throughout the four rounds and backed each other up when the going got tough,? he said.
Meanwhile, there were no surprises in the individual championship with Tim Conley of Avila Golf Club maintaining his lead in the junior division to finish with 93 stableford points, a Goodwill record. He was comfortably ahead of his nearest rival, Ron Philo of the Country Club of Vermont who finished on 77.
In the senior division, Bob Duval, father of PGA tour star David Duval, confirmed his superiority over the rest of the field with a winning score of 71 stableford points, four beyond Ed Whalley from the Meadow Brook Golf Club.
In the final team gross score standings, Avila Golf Club (264) were eventually forced into a play-off with the CC of Orange Park (264) after they were unable to hold on to their slim two shot advantage going into the final day.
But, thanks to a crucial birdie by San Bezant, they emerged victorious after the first play-off hole at Belmont Hills.
After the conclusion of play, an ?exhausted? tournament director Alex Madeiros was nevertheless very pleased with the way the annual tournament had progressed.
?Considering all the challenges we were confronted with, in terms of finding accommodation and dealing with the hangover from the hurricane on the courses, I?m very pleased with the 93 teams we managed to get out here,? he said.
?The weather held out, thank God, though it was a little windy earlier in the week. But still, all in all, I don?t think it could have gone better in the circumstances.?
